The Big 5: What They Are & Where to See Them
If you've ever researched an African safari, you've almost certainly come across the phrase "The Big 5."
Many people assume it refers to Africa's five biggest animals or the five rarest animals.
Neither is true.
The term Big 5 dates back to the days of big-game hunting and referred to the five animals that were considered the most difficult and dangerous to hunt on foot.
Today, thankfully, the term has taken on a much different meaning. Instead of hunting these incredible animals, travelers from around the world hope to photograph and observe them in their natural habitat.
So, who makes the list?
🦁 Lion
Often called the "King of the Jungle," lions are one of the most sought-after sightings on safari.
Unlike many big cats, lions are social animals that live in prides. It's common to find them resting during the heat of the day before becoming more active around sunrise and sunset.
Best places to see lions:
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Serengeti, Tanzania
Kruger National Park, South Africa
Okavango Delta, Botswana
🐘 African Elephant
The African elephant is the largest land animal on Earth, and seeing a herd move across the savanna is something you'll never forget.
They're incredibly intelligent, highly social, and play an important role in maintaining Africa's ecosystems.
Best places to see elephants:
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Kruger National Park, South Africa
Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
🐆 Leopard
If there's one member of the Big 5 that keeps safari travelers coming back, it's the leopard.
Leopards are solitary, elusive, and masters of camouflage. They're often spotted lounging in trees or moving silently through the bush.
On my own safari in Kenya, this was the only member of the Big 5 we didn't see, which just means I have another reason to go back!
Best places to see leopards:
Sabi Sands, South Africa
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Serengeti, Tanzania
🦏 Rhinoceros
Rhinos are among Africa's most endangered animals, making every sighting incredibly special.
Whether it's a black rhino or a white rhino, seeing one in the wild is an unforgettable experience and a reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation.
Best places to see rhinos:
Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya
Kruger National Park, South Africa
Etosha National Park, Namibia
🦬 African Buffalo
Buffalo may not always get the same attention as lions or elephants, but they deserve respect.
They travel in large herds, are incredibly strong, and are known for being unpredictable. Many experienced guides consider them one of Africa's most dangerous animals.
Best places to see buffalo:
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Kruger National Park, South Africa
Serengeti, Tanzania
Is Seeing the Big 5 the Goal?
For many first-time safari travelers, spotting all five animals is a bucket-list achievement.
But here's something I always tell my clients:
Don't let a checklist define your safari.
Some of my favorite memories had nothing to do with the Big 5.
Watching a family of elephants interact.
Seeing giraffes silhouetted against an African sunset.
Listening to lions roar after dark.
Watching a cheetah scan the horizon.
Safari is about the entire experience—not just checking animals off a list.
My Experience
When I traveled to Kenya in 2019, I was fortunate enough to see:
✅ Lion
✅ Elephant
✅ Rhino
✅ Buffalo
The only member of the Big 5 we missed was the leopard.
And honestly? That just gives me another reason to go back.
Every safari is different, and that's part of what makes them so incredible.
Final Thoughts
The Big 5 are famous for a reason, but they're only the beginning.
Africa is home to thousands of incredible species, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments that can't be captured by a simple checklist.
Whether your dream is photographing lions in Kenya, tracking leopards in South Africa, or watching elephants gather around a waterhole in Botswana, the best safari is the one that's designed around your travel style.
If you're ready to start planning your own safari adventure, I'd love to help you find the destination that's the right fit for you.
